Schema.org was introduced by Google on the 2nd of June 2011 and rich snippets in 2009. One can improve their SERP CTR very easily by using these.

People have had mixed feelings about Schema.org with regards to whether or not the markup gets rich snippets, and have been hesitant with regards to its implementation. Saying that, Schema.org has been evolving consistently and many new attributes have been added without really being noticed by the public. I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages.

One reason people did not use Schema.org was that it was not used by Google for rich snippets. That has changed, many websites from different fields are gaining benefits through rich snippets.

Examples of such websites are as follows: Ebay, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Ticketmaster, Isaveurs. As can be seen, each of these companies are all major players within their respective industries and also that Google is definatley using Schema.org.

Schema.org is not a language, but a microdata vocabulary. To mark up content for a page to obtain rich snippets one has to mix the vocabulary (Schema.org) with one of the languages i.e. microformats, microdata or RDFa. The vocabulary piece has been standardised by the search engines with Schema.org. Originally, Google announced they were only supporting microdata with Schema.org and dropping microformats and RDFa. It was also stated that they would continue to support the current rich snippets markup formats. This upset many people, so Google announced this would be fixed. A couple of days back it was stated that the RDFa language is to be used with the Schema.org vocabulary while supporting various vocabularies at the same time on the page.

Using the event Schema allows one to be very detailed and give as much information about the event as possible i.e. dates and times, who is performing, ticket sales and prices, venues, type of event (concerts, business shows, comedy shows, etc. Go to the http://schema.org/Event page for more information.

The jobs markup was announced on the schema blog last week. I think this one is very good. Today a customized search engine that only targets the Schema.org job markup was launched.

The person schema gives detailed info about a person, all types of information can be entered i.e. which football team is supported, family members, employment, location, friends, work colleagues, awards, education, etc. All of this information can be available when a person’s name is searched. See the http://schema.org/person link.

The news schema displays news events straight from the press as it is released. It is so useful for the news sites.

Rich snippets are very effective if one wants to attract attention to their listing. E-commerce websites without markup are losing out big time. Click through rates are increased by rich snippets.

I believe that much can be gained by implementing Schema.org. If you have not done so, you certainly should without delay……..

Get involved

“Treading carefully whilst walking upon thin ice” is what social media used to mean to the majority of businesses mainly because they felt that investment and vital resources, be it time, manpower or money, be wasted in a campaign that may not manage to claw back the costs, let alone increasing the revenue of a company, therefore breaking the ice and sinking into the abyss forever. Well, as far as I believe today, the only companies that will fall through the ice will be the one’s that do not involve themselves in a social media campaign in one form or another. The ice has thickened and is stronger than ever and social media is certainly proving it’s worth in the market place. ”The sooner, the better” as the old motto goes.

Everyone

When people in their 40’s and upwards tend to pick up on and start using modern things, the chances are that the under 40’s have already been doing so for quite some time and gaining the rewards these can produce.
Only showing signs of growing and growing daily, not showing any sign of slowing, social media is snowballing and is now takes a portion of nearly every human being’s life on the planet. This leads us to become influenced and has a substantial effect in the way we behave with each other i.e. how we chat to each other, what we talk about, have in common, things we like and dislike.

Branding

Association with a major brand, be it fashion, cars or household products etc, has a major effect on what influences people to part with their money. Major research has recently shown that when shopping online, people will more readily hand over their money for a product to a company that has a Facebook icon at the bottom of the screen which is active, rather than to a company that has the same product with no Facebook icon on it.

Rotten Vegetables

When growing a variety of vegetables on a farm a percentage will be rotten. As the amount of vegetables increases, so will the amount of rotten vegetables increase, especially if the farmer does not take care in how he grows them i.e. not using pesticides to kill off any bugs and certain rodent poisons. If, however, the farmer uses these plus keeping the different vegetables in separate fields avoiding cross-contamination, placing nets and scarecrows in areas, as to avoid birds eating crops, there would definitely be less rotten vegetables produced. If the same method is applied to a group of people who are all interested in the same brand on the internet and is proved to be trusted by having nothing but good reviews, it can then become a very strong and influential tool for the brand. Only a person who wants to promote a product positively and grow a community behind it will do so, therefore gaining trust.

Community Building Is Key

How to build a community that supports a business is one factor that should always be considered when promoting a business. Once a hardcore, loyal fan base is established the business will grow. The fans must be treated respectably and made to feel special, this leads to the building of a community that will always be trusting. The business will grow, this can happen in an extremely short space of time.

Google is still, by a long way, the largest search engine.
Yahoo and Bing both formed a partnership around August 2009. Google receives around 65% of all internet search results. Over the last few months, from around November 2011 in fact, Bing has overtaken Yahoo in the number of searches and results per month. Many used to, and many still do, believe Bing is “small fry” when compared to the “mighty” Google. It very slightly reminds me of David and Goliath, but as we all know, one should never underestimate their opponent, though I do not believe that Google will be toppled by Bing, but I do firmly believe that the market place will slowly have a more balanced share of searches in the coming years. This then leads us towards how differently the search engines work from each other, thus leading to how companies will use their variety of SEO tools to accommodate the different search engines. At the moment a website will not receive as much traffic from Bing as it does from Google, but if the site is optimised for Bing as well, I believe the Bing rankings will immediately increase, not by much because that takes time, but an increase should obviously be visible. The age group of surfers that are more inclined to use Bing is 45+. There may be several underlying reasons for this, but I actually believe it is a much more simple one.

When buying a pc with windows the default browser on the machine is going to be Internet Explorer (IE), Bing is Internet Explorer’s default search engine. Older people, who are generally not technical when it comes to changing settings, will tend to use whatever they are given. The windows mobile phone is fully integrated with Bing. It has been around for a few years and sales are increasing at a steady rate.

More recently, both Bing and Yahoo announced search results would be supplied by Bing. This, however, is still only in the testing stages. Yahoo and Bing will not merge into one, well not yet or in the foreseeable future, they will still be separate entities, but all the search results will be from Bing. Microsoft are hoping to have this fully functional late Summer this year in Canada and the USA.
If one has a ranking website in Yahoo and not in Bing, then the site’s ranking will drop, but if it is ranking in Bing, it will rank the same in Yahoo as well.
If a site is not ranking well in Bing, then something needs to be done sooner rather than later. Google SEO is different to Bing SEO in many ways, so it is crucial that this is carried out with precision.

The purchase of Instagram by Facebook for $1billion does not mean that Instagram will no longer exist. It will be a sub-division overlooked by facebook and still work with social networks like Twitter and Flickr. As soon as this announcement was made by Facebook many tweets appeared from people stating they are going to close their Instgram accounts.
Personally, I do like Instagram for the way in which interesting pictures can be created, but am not a great fan of the user experience. I believe Facebook will be able to help Instagram evolve by making it accessible through a pc and not just a phone.
Most people are concerned about privacy. Anything that you post on the Internet, whether it be Facebook or anywhere else, belongs to the web and will stay there forever. My suggestion is to either stop complaining, or get out.
Changes will obviously be made to Instagram because Facebook will need to earn their investment back, but the right changes must be made so that it can become wonderfully successful rather than the wrong changes being made and everything becoming disastrously unsuccessful.
I do not believe it is necessary for people to delete their Instgram accounts for the reason that Facebook is purchasing it.

February 2012 Update

Venice is Google’s codename for the update that made the biggest news in February 2012. With over 35 changes to algorithms, many debates have occurred as a result of this.

How the change in the evaluation of links will now be determined and the effect on the internet this may have, is causing the debates. It will be some time before we start to see the changes Venice has on search results. Google often makes updates and with Venice will be turning off a various link signals. Many now believe that Google is looking to move more towards social media and innovative content as ranking factors rather than strength in links. Google might treat links in a more intelligent way, but I believe we should never forget about link building.

Venice is an important update for the localisation of searches and results. Google will deliver a result which is geographically related to the location of the search query without a location being entered in the first place.

Venice has already commenced, therefore it is advisable for one to have a local search results strategy in place within their SEO.

Google detects locations based on IP addresses and filters results accordingly.

Google calculates the results by determining which are local to the IP address from where the search query came. This works whether one is, or is not, logged in to their Google account.

“Local” has become quite a large portion within the algorithm and cannot be avoided.

From now on, one should have a correctly and completely optimised local strategy in place.

On page old techniques that are significant should still be incorporated and is very important that they are.

This will be one of the deciding factors as to whether an article or site appears on page one or two.

It’s used generally to explain both crawler-based search engines and human-powered directories. These two types of search engines gather their listings in radically different ways.

Crawler-Based Search Engines
Crawler-based search engines, such as Google, create their listings automatically. They “crawl” or “spider” the web, then users search through what they have found.
If you change your web pages, crawler-based search engines ultimately find these changes, and that can affect how your site will be listed and by the way, the more you add or change in your site, you will add to your chances to bring back those “Crawl”/”Spiders”!

Things that will increase the Spiders visits are: Page titles, changing and adding new relevant content and more inbound links.
Human-Powered Directories
Human-powered directory, named based on the point that you as a Human will submit your site to Open Directories. In the process you will need to submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. The search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.
Not like Crawler-Based Search Engines changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that if you have a good site with good content and a good Page Rank might be more likely to get reviewed for free than a poor site.

“Hybrid Search Engines” Or Mixed Results
The way it use to be in the early days of the web, the search engine either presented crawler-based results or human-powered listings but in this Days, it’s extremely common for both types of results to be presented. In most cases, the Hybrid search engine will favor one type of listings over another.

There aren’t that many firms that don’t have a website of some description. This implies that there is an insane amount of competition on the web for all types of products and services. The key to making sales from your website is both a excellent web site design and also a good search engine marketing strategy.

Search engine marketing is what a website requires to get noticed by the searchers on the internet. Of course, the very best person to speak to about sales on the web is really a search engine marketing specialist.

They can employ several different search engine marketing techniques.

The very first process is the pay per click marketing. You specify funds and submit advertising models text to Adwords marketing. Your adverts are then placed on web pages that are pay per click on your advertisement. Each advertisement is worth a certain amount and your advert is replaced as soon as your funds run out. The more you are willing to pay, the more your advert is going to be displayed. The trick here is to discover excellent, popular keywords and to allow your advert to appear as soon as those keywords are searched for.

The following choice is through websites. You get a banner or seven designed and hire space on websites. The banner is linked to your website and you get site visitors through men and women clicking on your banner and getting redirected to your website.

The last choice is seo services. The aim of this search engine marketing is to get the search engine to recognize you as a crucial website to show for certain keywords. Again, you should discover popular keywords and target those through link building services. Most search engine marketing organizations will have a variety of approaches for building links for the website.

The key concept behind all this search engine marketing is to drive site visitors to your website. This can be achieved by linking your website to relevant keywords so that whenever someone searches for the keyword, your website appears inside the listing, be it the natural results, paid results or on a different website through a promotion or paid advertisement.

The whole system is really time intensive and most entrepreneurs don’t have the time to do it themselves, or the knowledge for that matter. This is why search engine marketing organizations evolved. Like other promotion models companies, they do your promotion models on the web for you so you don’t need to worry about hiring someone to do it internally.

Of course, there are several resources which can automate a lot of the procedures, but you should be careful about what you sign up for. Some of these procedures are detectable by Google and frowned upon. They include elements like link building resources, web link directories and several other things that are considered taboo and not kosher as far as search engine marketing goes. You’re significantly safer going through a business that has been doing this kind of thing effectively for several years.

Whenever you design and style your website pages for more effective search engine results positioning, you need to feel just like the internet search engine algorithms do. The fundamental procedure is quite simple. Set up the whole subject matter of the web page. In case you have actually been included in an internet site development and SEO task, it’s probably that you’ve currently noticed many developers and website optimizers bang heads.

There is no worse place to attract negative feedback than on the internet. While offline businesses can coast by on the power of word of mouth alone (which, when it comes to negative feedback, is generally insignificant), online businesses are forever tied to online comments, whether negative or positive. Search results do not disappear, and negative comments, whether on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, stay indexed no matter how your business responds.

While it is difficult to completely erase negative feedback, it is not impossible to reach out and try to cool the flames. There are rules of engagement for online reputation management. This sampling of potential rules, strategies, and tactics will no doubt help your business respond to criticism, manage online discussion, and create a positive online feedback presence.

1) Don’t fight fire with fire.

It is frustrating to observe an online argument. Much like the cliché talk show yelling match, online arguments tend to descend into ad hominem fights quite quickly. There is nothing to be won when you engage an angry person with more aggression, only more to be lost. Take the chance to cool the flames by approaching negative commenter’s with the possibility of a solution.

How do celebrities respond to bad press? Some ignore it, others respond directly, but very few resort to unrestrained attacks. Pretend you are a public figure — it is not just your company responding, but you — and act accordingly.

2) Use social media profiles to shape your search results.

Google your company’s name and check what comes up. In the online world, your Google results (or Bing or Yahoo, if you prefer) are your scorecard. Every negative result is a potential customer-killer, and every unwanted search presence is another bullet hole in your company’s brand.

It is up to you as a marketer to influence these results. While SEO campaigns can be difficult with a non-influential website, using social media to influence your results can be quite simple. Set up company profiles on different social media websites and use them to control your first page search results. With only a few high-PR social media profiles, you can easily drive out unwanted results and more effectively control your online branding.

3) Use social media for support, not structure.

The bulk of your branding should come from the most effective marketing outlets available to your business. For some, that is pay-per-click marketing. For others, it is banner advertising and visual branding. Very few businesses can use social media as a primary branding outlet, and the few that can typically use it for direct reputation management.

When you need to establish a brand, you go for the most powerful channels. When you need to respond to criticism about your brand, you go to the most accessible channels. Use social media to respond to criticism about your business and your brand, not as a platform for establishing it. Social media is effective for specifics — in this case, the small percentage of people who are impacting your business negatively — and significantly less effective as a marketing platform.
